Introduction
Title: Cake Wars
Target Audience: 10th grade Geometry Honors
Project Description: This project will span approximately two weeks. The central theme of the project is discovering areas of plane figures. The sequence of lessons is as follows:
Area of Parallelograms, Area of Triangles, Area of Rhombi and Kites, Area of Regular Polygons. We will take our field trip where we further explore areas of regular polygons, then work on our presentations which will be presented at the end of our second week, followed by a unit test.
Final Product: The final product the students will present is a rubric they designed to judge the cake entries. The students will share which cake is the winning cake according to their rubric. This product is an authentic representation for real world issues because people will need to have criteria by which they judge things. Before an audience of students, teachers, parents and community members, the students will explain which is their winning cake and why.
Rationale: On a small scale, this project is significant to the students because it concerns a social event they look forward to all year, Homecoming. They are given the opportunity to judge and determine which cake will be served at Homecoming. This project makes learning about areas relevant and fun for the students. This project is authentic to the larger adult community because many professions require the use of calculating areas and knowing that we are teaching students real-world applications help to better prepare them for the real-world.
