Assessments
Formative assessments include, but are not limited to:
Class discussions
One-on-one interactions and questioning between teacher and student
Do Nows
Exit slips
Two specific formative assessments used in the PBI unit include:
- Create the Problem - Problem: A regular hexagon has a side length of 16 2/3 and an apothem of 8. The area of this hexagon is 400. How did we find this? Explain.
- Exit Slip - Find the perimeter and area of a regular dodecagon (12-sided) inscribed in a circle, with radius one. Round to the nearest hundredth. Hints: Find angle made by two consecutive radii and then use trigonometry.
The “Create the Problem” promotes students learning by prompting students to think backwards about a concept they just learned. This will show the teacher the understanding of the student and not just that the student memorized the procedure.
The Exit slip will help to show the teacher what the students learned form the lesson so that the teacher can then reflect on the students’ understanding and prepare for the next day’s lesson. This will help students to reflect back and make connections about the important facts of the lesson.
Summative assessments include, bat are not limited to:
Submitted group rubric
Group presentation and reasoning
Unit test
All three forms of summative assessment are considered in this PBI unit.
