Field Trip Information
For our field trip, we want to take our students to Leonardo's Pizza at 1245 W University Ave. Since the theme of our unit is about creating your own pizza joint, this seems like the perfect place- it's a great Gainesville local restaurant that many of the students will have been to, and it has very good reviews for both its pizza and service. This restaurant was also chosen because it is very close to GHS and because of its friendly relations with nearby businesses. After the introduction to the project on the first day, this field trip will follow on the second day and give the students a chance to intentionally observe what they like, don't like, etc.
While the students are at Leonardo’s they will fill in a worksheet about the different things that they observed. Rather than let them go free, a worksheet will help to regulate their note-taking and to make sure that they get all the information that they might need. The worksheet will have questions for the three different types of employees- managers, servers and delivery drivers.
The only information provided at the restaurant is the food prices – there are no nutrition facts or anything else. However, one of the biggest resources that is there are the employees. Each of these has a unique opinion of the different aspects of the restaurant and can tell us different things, whether about pay differences, the ups and downs of their position, or other issues the students want to clarify with pizza employees. Seeing this restaurant will give students perspective to reflect back on throughout the whole project in case they have little prior experience with pizza joints.
This won't require any special previous student knowledge except for a discussion on day one about what kinds of things will make a successful pizza place.
The protocol for field trips is five-step process. The first is to go to the bookkeeper to get an event form then get approval from the principal. After that the teacher must submit the students’ names at the front office to excuse the student absences. Then the teacher will hand out the permission slips to the students to have them signed and returned. The teacher will keep one copy and give one to the event coordinator.
